International Conference Sustainable Agriculture and the Environment

The International Conference on Sustainable Agriculture and the Environment, organized by the Higher School of Agronomy Mostaganem, Algeria, is a prominent event that aims to address the pressing issues surrounding sustainable agriculture. Taking place on May 25 and 26, 2024, this conference will bring together decision-makers, researchers, producers, and consumers to collectively deliberate and explore alternative models to conventional agriculture. By fostering insightful discussions and knowledge sharing, the conference seeks to pave the way towards a sustainable and resilient agricultural future.

Understanding Sustainable Agriculture

Sustainable agriculture, as defined by the United Nations in 1987, strives to meet present needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. It rests on three pillars of sustainable development: economic viability, social equity, and ecological soundness. By encompassing an economically viable agriculture that contributes to regional development, fosters urban-rural linkages, and generates value and quality employment, sustainable agriculture seeks to create a balanced and thriving ecosystem.

Challenges and Focus Areas

The conference will revolve around four main challenges that sustainable agriculture faces today. These challenges encompass a range of crucial focus areas, and each will be explored in-depth through various sessions and presentations:

  1. Management of Fragile Environments and Ecosystem Restoration: The first theme emphasizes the importance of managing fragile environments and restoring ecosystems. Participants will delve into strategies to conserve and rehabilitate ecosystems, mitigate land degradation, and protect biodiversity in agricultural landscapes.

  2. Food Security in the Context of Climate Change: The second theme recognizes the significance of food security amidst the challenges posed by climate change. Discussions will center around innovative approaches to ensure sustainable food production, adapt to changing climatic conditions, and enhance resilience within the agricultural sector.

  3. Sustainable Agricultural Practices and Biodiversity: The third theme focuses on promoting sustainable agricultural practices that preserve biodiversity. Experts will share insights on agroecology, organic farming, and the integration of biodiversity conservation into agricultural systems, highlighting the benefits of these practices for ecosystem health and productivity.

  4. Sustainable Water and Soil Management in Agriculture: The fourth theme highlights the importance of sustainable water and soil management in agriculture. Participants will explore efficient irrigation techniques, soil conservation methods, and integrated water resource management strategies to enhance productivity while minimizing environmental impacts.

  5. Technological Innovations for Sustainable Agricultural Development: The final theme sheds light on the role of technological innovations in driving sustainable agricultural development. Discussions will cover advancements in precision agriculture, digital solutions, and agri-tech applications that contribute to resource efficiency, productivity, and resilience.

The International Conference on Sustainable Agriculture and the Environment is a crucial platform for researchers, practitioners, and stakeholders to come together and exchange ideas on pressing issues in agriculture. By addressing the challenges faced by farmers, the environment, territories, and consumers, this conference aims to foster the development of innovative production systems that align with the principles of sustainable development. Through collaborative efforts, it is hoped that sustainable agriculture can be achieved, leading to a brighter and more resilient future for generations to come.
